Modern Luxury: The Stunning In-Floor Wine Cellar in California That’s Redefining Storage

A wine cellar isn’t just about storage—it’s a statement of sophistication, design, and passion for fine wine. In Newport Beach, California, one homeowner took this vision to the next level with a stunning two-level wine cellar, seamlessly integrating a modern glass-enclosed display space with a climate-controlled storage cellar beneath. Crafted by Vintage Cellars, this project showcases cutting-edge LUX racking, LED-enhanced lighting, and precision-engineered cooling systems, ensuring that every bottle is both beautifully presented and perfectly preserved. But what truly sets this project apart is its innovative approach to connected wine storage. The glass-enclosed upper display cellar creates a breathtaking showcase, while the spacious lower cellar maintains ideal aging conditions. From custom two-tone wood racking to patent-pending glass racking technology, every detail of this cellar redefines luxury. Want to see how it all came together? Read on to discover how Vintage Cellars turned an ambitious vision into a wine lover’s dream.

This Wine Cellar with Upstairs and Downstairs Sections Elevates Wine Storage

How about an in-floor wine cellar California neighborhoods would envy? Imagine walking into your home or business and being greeted by a breathtaking glass-enclosed wine cellar seamlessly integrated into your space. More than just a storage solution, a custom wine cellar is a statement—one that speaks to sophistication, innovation, and a deep appreciation for fine wine. For one homeowner in Newport Beach, California, this dream became a reality with a bespoke in-floor wine cellar that effortlessly blends artistry and engineering.  Designed and installed by Vintage Cellars, this project redefines luxury wine storage. “The client wanted something that had never been done before—a distinctive style of racking that matched the upscale elegance of his home,” Chris of Vintage Cellar explains. The result? Two distinct connected wine cellars, flawlessly integrating a display area and a climate-controlled storage space while maintaining separate purposes.

The Display Cellar: A Striking Upper-Level Showpiece

The first of the two cellars is a glass door wine cellar in-floor, designed primarily for wine display and serving. With its sophisticated look and strategic location in the home, you’d be happy to wine and dine any time of day.

LUX Racking: A First-of-Its-Kind

One of the defining features of this display cellar made with Walnut wood is its cutting-edge racking system. This client was the first to try Vintage Cellars’ newly developed LUX racking series, a sophisticated, patent-pending system that enhances both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The sleek, glass-accented racking provides a modern floating effect, making the bottles appear as though they are suspended in midair.  With a ceiling height of more than 103”, the glass door wine cellar in floor can hold a total of 64 bottles.

Illuminating the Collection with LED Lighting

To further enhance the visual impact, this cellar incorporates strategically placed LED lighting. Recessed into the dividers and seamlessly integrated into the glass racks, the lighting creates a warm glow that highlights each bottle’s label and structure. “The way the light transmits through the glass racking gives an incredible floating effect,” Chris explains. This level of design sophistication transforms the display cellar into a centerpiece of the home.

Cooling Considerations for the Display Space

Though primarily designed for showcasing wine, the upper cellar maintains a controlled environment suitable for serving. Keeping wine at an optimal serving temperature—between 62- and 65-degrees Fahrenheit—was a priority. Instead of installing a separate cooling system, the team implemented booster fans to pull cool air from the lower storage cellar, ensuring the display area remains within the ideal range.

The Storage Cellar: Precision-Engineered for Aging Wines

While the upper-level wine cellar is built for immediate access and display, the lower-level cellar with a ceiling height of 94” is the heart of preservation. It maintains precise humidity and temperature conditions, ensuring that wine collections age gracefully over time. This distinction between the two spaces allows the homeowner to enjoy the best of both worlds—a beautifully presented collection upstairs and a meticulously stored inventory below.

Ambient Custom Racking: Two-Tone Wood Wine Cellar Design

Perhaps this wine cellar is meant to be a storage space, but it can also be a mesmerizing showpiece. This cellar features a two-tone wood racking, utilizing a combination of walnut and alder with a custom dark gray stain. The contrast between the rich walnut and the lighter alder creates an elegant yet contemporary look. “Two-tone designs are making a comeback, and we wanted to ensure the materials were both elegant and complementary,” Chris shares. The strategic placement under a staircase added another layer of complexity to the design, requiring meticulous measurements to ensure a precise fit.  The wine cellar’s racking system includes double-deep individual display rows and diamond bins, label view and cork view display space with glass pegs. It’s a perfect wine storage with a total capacity of 1738 bottles of 750s and even magnums. To enhance the functionality of the wine cellar, a series of double-deep glass stemware is also installed on the side of the rack. This sophisticated set-up is perfect for an in-floor wine cellar California homes deserve!

Advanced Cooling and Air Circulation: A Climate-Controlled Haven for Fine Wines

Unlike the display cellar, the lower-level wine cellar is built for long-term wine storage, with carefully calibrated climate controls to ensure optimal aging conditions. Spanning 20 feet in length, this split-level wine cellar includes two vertical rack mount evaporator coils to maintain even cooling. “We designed a system with inline booster fans to pull air from the lower cellar up to the display area,” Chris explains. “It’s an innovative approach that allows both spaces to function in harmony.”  Maintaining a consistent temperature between 55 and 58is crucial for wine preservation. The storage cellar is equipped with two high efficiency cooling units, ensuring that temperature and humidity levels remain optimal. The use of booster fans also allows cold air to be distributed evenly throughout the space, preventing temperature fluctuations that could compromise the wine’s quality.

Glass Doors for In-Floor Wine Cellar California: A Seamless Connection

A defining feature of the storage cellar is its custom-designed glass doors, which provide a seamless connection between the upper and lower levels. These doors allow for a continuous visual flow while maintaining the integrity of the climate-controlled environment inside. “The client wanted something that felt connected but still functioned separately, and the glass doors helped achieve that balance,” Chris explains. The transparency maintains visibility while protecting the wine from fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

A Testament to Innovation and Elegance

This two-story wine display and storage solution represents more than just functionality—it’s a blend of craftsmanship and creativity. The stunning visual appeal of the glass floor wine cellar adds an artistic dimension to the space, making it a statement piece as much as a practical storage area. The innovative use of split-level wine cellar engineering showcases how forward-thinking design can enhance both usability and aesthetic impact.  The careful planning, engineering, and attention to detail that went into this upper and lower wine cellar make it a standout example of what’s possible in luxury wine storage. “This seller speaks for itself,” Chris says proudly. “It’s absolutely amazing to see the transition from upstairs to downstairs—it feels connected but distinct at the same time.”
