Glass Wine Cellar Under the Stairs in Laguna Niguel, CA Luxury Home

In this Laguna Niguel home, the space beneath the grand staircase once posed a design dilemma: how to add a full wine cellar without disrupting the home’s airy, ocean-view layout. Our solution was a glass wine cellar under the stairs. Its transparent walls reveal a refined mix of modern matte black racks, brick textures, and a 344-bottle collection. The empty space has been transformed into a functional, glass-enclosed wine storage that preserves the openness and coastal light that define the living space.

Maximizing Space in Style with Under-Stairs Glass Wine Cellar

The design and build teams originally intended the grand staircase to act as a visual transition from the front entry toward the ocean-facing living areas. However, the staircase also partially blocked that sight line. By enclosing this modern wine cellar under stairs entirely in glass, the visibility through the space was restored, reconnecting the front of the home with the views beyond. The vertical volume created by the staircase enhances the cellar's architectural interest. Rather than seeing it as a limitation, the varying ceiling heights were leveraged to create a dynamic display that draws the eye upward through the floor-to-ceiling metal wine racks.

Under-Stairs Glass Wine Cellar That Won’t Disrupt the Gorgeous Ocean Views

Our project partners Elevated Building GroupSpectrum Architecture, and Laura Brophy Interiors brought us in with a vision: to create an ocean view wine cellar in a Laguna Niguel, CA home. The result is a frameless glass wine cellar under the stairs with enclosures that maintain the open-concept aesthetic of the home while preserving the views toward the ocean beyond. The reflective quality of the glass also amplifies lighting features day and night, turning the wine collection into a glowing centerpiece.

Does Light Flowing Through Glass Enclosures Affect the Wine Collection?

Because the original staircase design created a visual barrier, the fully transparent enclosure now allows you to see straight through the cellar into the living room — and toward the ocean beyond. The use of glass walls transforms the under-staircase space into an open, light-filled glass walk-in wine cellar under the staircase, creating visual continuity with the rest of the living area. The transparent enclosure allows natural light to flow through while keeping the collection in full view without negative impact on the wine quality. Despite the all-glass construction, the wine remains protected: the area receives no direct sunlight or UV exposure, and the dual pane insulated glass ensures proper thermal control.

A Peek Inside: How a 344-Bottle Capacity Is Made Possible Under the Stairs

This modern wine cellar under the stairs project is a display-oriented wine cellar. The homeowners wanted a visually striking feature more than achieving high-capacity storage. But the final build of the cellar still achieves an impressive 344-bottle capacity without compromising functionality.

Modern Floor-to-Ceiling Metal Wine Racks

There’s only so much space you can use under the stairs. So our solution? A configuration with 14 columns of VintageView floor-to-ceiling metal wine racksmetal wine racks with label-forward and cork-forward presentation, achieving a 260-bottle in-rack display. This striking arrangement of custom matte black wine racks are installed at varying heights to work with the slanted ceiling. And the matte black finish complements the frameless custom wine cellar with glass walls instead of disrupting the open space view. Using matte black metal racking not only accents the space beautifully but elevates how the bottles are displayed, aligning with the project’s display-forward goal.

Custom White Oak Wine Cabinet Storage

The wall at the end of the space was the perfect place for a white oak wine cellar cabinet to ground the design in warmth and craftsmanship. More importantly, it provides more room for the wine collection, as it features:
  • Individual magnum bottle wine storage cubbies
  • Shelving for 750ml bottles
  • Case storage compartments
The natural wood grain complements other oak finishes throughout the home, creating visual harmony. Meanwhile, the classic herringbone flooring and brick ceiling also help the cellar feel connected to the overall interior design rather than isolated as a utilitarian space. Above the white oak cabinetry are two custom louvered grills, which elegantly hide the cooling system. Overall, the concealed design keeps the aesthetic clean while offering practical storage capacity.

Elegant Display with Wall-Mounted Wine Pins

Above the open white oak shelving are 18 double-deep wall-mounted wine rack pins in a label-forward presentation. This display allows select bottles to be highlighted at eye level and maximizes the available wall space without blocking views through the glass walls. These wall-mounted elements work in tandem to accommodate both display-worthy vintages and everyday selections. The matte black finish provides a bold contrast against the warm white oak below, achieving a balance of modern minimalism and organic texture.

Keeping Precious Wine Collection in Top Condition

A wine cellar doesn’t just need to be stunning and spacious; it also needs to provide the optimal condition to preserve the homeowners’ precious collection.

Engineered Cooling for a Glass Wine Cellar Under the Stairs

Proper preservation is essential, particularly in a glass-enclosed wine cellar. This cellar features an RM 12000 EC TE twin evaporator cooling system, a commercial-grade unit built for residential applications. Its dual evaporators maintain even temperature and humidity, critical in an environment with large glass surfaces. Because the cellar is beneath a sloped staircase, airflow engineering was especially important. The dual evaporators were positioned to ensure consistent cooling from the highest racks to the lowest, overcoming the natural temperature challenges created by the staircase structure.

Vents That Disappear into the Design

To integrate climate control seamlessly, custom white oak louvered grills were mounted in the soffit. These provide necessary ventilation while echoing the design language of the cabinetry below, ensuring no mechanical detail feels out of place. The result is a cohesive and intentional finish throughout the space. The brick ceiling and sloped brick areas were spray-foamed to achieve airtight insulation. This maintains consistent and stable temperature, as well as proper insulation throughout the cellar.

Modern Wine Cellar That Creates a Well-Connected Entertaining Space

Built-In Serving Space for Effortless Entertaining

The open countertop above the white oak cabinetry gives this glass wine cellar under stairs more purpose. It serves as a functional zone for pouring wine, setting out charcuterie, placing decanters, or even acting as a small butler’s pantry. A few guests can comfortably step inside the cellar without feeling separated from gatherings happening in the living room, thanks to the all-glass enclosure.

Purposefully Connected Entertaining Space

Luxury home design is moving away from the idea that everything should feel completely open at all times. Instead, more homeowners and designers are leaning toward layouts that feel purposefully connected. When done right, spaces still flow together, but each area has its own identity and intention. In this Laguna Niguel project, the glass wine cellar under the stairs introduces a clear sense of separation. But because the enclosure is fully transparent, the staircase transition feels more intentional while still making the spaces look and feel connected.

An Inviting Glass Wine Cellar for a Connected, Open Living Room Experience

Beyond aesthetics, the custom wine cellar with glass walls makes the entire living space feel more open and connected. Because it’s fully glass-enclosed, homeowners can entertain guests in the living room while others enjoy the cellar without feeling isolated, which is a unique advantage of the see-through design.

Luxury Wine Storage That Transforms an Empty Space into a Coastal Home’s Showpiece

The completed glass wine cellar under stairs is a prime example of how thoughtful design can convert transitional space into a luxury feature. With a 344-bottle capacity, this cellar meets the needs of a serious collector while making a powerful design statement. Every detail, from the custom materials to the racking configuration and lighting, was chosen to make this cellar feel integrated, purposeful, and beautiful. Truly, this modern wine cellar under stairs delivers a conversation piece, a design anchor, and a clear reflection of the homeowner’s lifestyle.
