It’s a Gorgeous Kitchen Wine Storage Under Stairs for this Orange County Home

Wine storage under stairs is a luxurious and absolutely worthwhile project for any home. It maximizes unused space and do it in a very impressive and remarkable way. That’s why when an avid wine collector meets a passionate wine cellar designer, the resulting wine storage under stairs becomes a truly magical piece of art. Take it from this beautiful kitchen wine cellar under the stairs!

Wine Cellar Under the Stairs Design

This wine storage under the stairs was fully visible from the kitchen and living area.

A Chic Welcome Using Classic French Doors

Traditional French doors are typically characterized by numerous panes of glass showcased in a grid style. The framing can be built with either wood or metal. But in this project, we opted to use stainless steel to frame the 4×2 grid. Every section of the metal frame was painted in black — the same shade of black used in the metal wine rack.

Backlighting always makes a difference to wine cellars.

Since the cellar’s color palette consisted of neutrals — black metal racks, brown wooden wine shelves, and off-white walls — going with a black glass door created a stark visual balance, where dark colors frame the wine collection, and the lighter hues fill the spaces in between. If you’re fond of contemporary, chic, and classy, this wine cellar would definitely give you the feel!

Metropolitan-Style Custom Wine Cellar Racks

Chic-industrial wine cellar interiors are one of the most sought-after designs if you’re looking to strike an urban yet homey feel. Combining organic and inorganic materials like wood and metal in one design space lets you achieve this kind of aesthetic, and more so with the help of natural stone walls you’ll see in this wine storage under stairs.

There are three parts to this wine cellar’s racking design, and they cover three sides of the room. The leftmost wall is clad in metal wine racks from floor to ceiling; the center wall is dressed in metal and wooden wine racks, while a short wooden wine shelf at the bottom maximizes the rightmost wall.

Since the space underneath the stairs is irregularly shaped, with the rightmost wall having the lowest ceiling height, a short, custom wooden wine shelf was the only storage it could accommodate.

Metal Wine Cellar Racks for that Urban Touch

We used wine pegs to constitute the metal racking. These are easily customizable pegs where you can store one to three bottles per pair. For this wine collection, though, we went with the double-deep metal pegs on the center wall and single-deep metal pegs on the left wall.

The pegs are also built for flexible installation, so you can anchor them directly to the main wall, backer boards, or any other secondary surface. For this wine cellar project, we used metal framing, which stood inside the cellar like pillars. As you can imagine, these metal frames are screwed onto the ceiling, floor, and wooden shelves on both ends.

With this wine cellar’s dimensions, we were able to install two full-length metal racks and five half-length metal racks. In sum, the metal wine racks alone could hold a total of 113 standard-sized wine bottles!

Custom Wood Wine Racks For a More Restful Vibe

To add more visual diversity and storage capacity, wooden wine racks were customized to fill the lower parts of the middle and right walls. You can see lattice diamond bins and a few standard 750 storage units painted in a walnut-like shade.

These double-deep metal racks are set in front of a stone wall which we fully insulated.

Diamond bins are great space-savers as you can securely stack the bottles on top of each other. Since they store the bottles in a cork-forward way, they are preferable to storing extra wine stocks.

A Unique Wine Cellar Lighting Approach

The level of intricacy inside this under-the-stairs wine cellar is something we are very proud of. While the wine racks, french door, and natural stone walls give this wine cellar under the stairs its signature look, the other thing that truly transforms this storage space into an extraordinary closet is the lighting.

We installed two types of LED lights to set the mood for this wine display. The first group are the simple ceiling lights that illuminate the front side of the wine collection. This is the first set of lights that greet you whenever you step inside.

The second group consists of the backlights, which are hidden from sight. The decision to set off the metal racks a few inches away from the stone wall was to make way for the backlights. Strips of wine cellar-friendly LED lights were attached behind the metal rack framing so their shine is directed towards the stone wall. We can say that the pairing of the backlights and the stone wall is what makes the wine display look truly phenomenal.

Imagine preparing a lovely dinner you’ve been planning for a long time with this wine cellar fully lit up! It’s the kind of support you’ll need for that warm and cozy evening.
