The investors of this spec home thought a wine cellar would be an appealing luxury upgrade that would increase its market value. If you’re wondering what a spec home is, it’s a house that a group of investors remodeled into a high-end home to be sold later. And any potential buyer would be so happy to find a small wine room sitting beside the dining table, ready to entertain and delight.
Many homeowners nowadays switch to multi-story house design, and then move their dining and living area to the second floor. Style-wise, this design elevates the contemporary concept to a whole new level. Of course, there are caveats depending on the additions that you have in mind.
Building the wine cellar on the second floor posed a few challenges to the Vintage Cellars team. Some important questions arise, which you also need to think about if you are looking to build a small wine cellar on second floor in your Nashville home.
One thing that we had to consider was the size of the area. The team needed to assess if the wine cellar’s features will be compatible with the allotted space. Fortunately, for this home, everything turned out perfect! The wine cellar, although small, measures just enough for a medium-sized 336 bottle collection, giving enough room for the dining area. All the specific decorations intended for the design also made it inside.
Another consideration was the location. Since the architect envisioned the wine cellar on second floor, the team had to figure out if the mechanical features will work: Is the space enough to get the mechanical and drain line from the specific area to where it needs to go? Does it have a crawl space? If things don’t work mechanically, then it would just be a regular room to store wines.
For the wine racking system, Vintage Cellars installed the Vino Post series by VintageView . These vertical metal posts have horizontal double-deep pegs. The wines are then displayed in label-forward position allowing you easy access to your favorite wine. Vintage Cellars thought it would be aesthetically pleasing to place one in the center and on each side. The style is simple yet elegant, luxurious-looking, and modern, having simpler lines and cleaner design.
The floating shelves create a charming display space for 750 ml wine bottles that you can store horizontally or vertically. Enjoy a fine evening with the liquor of your choice or a share special and ordinary moments with family and friends because the wines are just within your reach.
Resting close to the floating wonders is a decanting area where you can entertain guests with a specialty wine or two. Or, if you feel like popping a bottle for an afternoon or evening chill, the decanting area is a convenient place to do so. Below that decanting area is a universal rectangular storage where wine cases, decanters, glasses, and other things can be stored.
For the lighting, the Vintage Cellars team first measured out exactly where the lighting should go. The goal is to create a subtle and elegant ambiance. With the goal of accenting the bottles and the racking as well, the lighting concept involves recessed fixtures strategically placed in the ceiling and floor. This innovative approach allows the light to wash over the front of the bottles, creating a captivating display that highlights the collection.
Rather than the traditional horizontal lighting that draws the eye across labels, this design directs the gaze vertically, aligning with contemporary trends in wine cellar design. The same thing was done on the back side as well as next to the glass enclosure on the right side. Truly, the lighting’s clean and unobtrusive aesthetic ensures that the bottles take center stage in this stunning small wine room on second floor.
For this small-sized wine cellar, Vintage Cellars chose the Whisperkool 8000 ceiling mount . This type of cooling system is a ductless split system with the compressor placed outdoors and evaporator coil placed indoors and recessed into the ceiling with an insulation jacket that goes on top of the system.
From a viewer’s standpoint, the equipment is not obvious at all as it’s subtly flushed into the ceiling. But, in fact, the 12–14-inch cooling system needed enough space to accomplish the clean finish. Meanwhile, the mechanical can be accessed through a pull-down hatch at the bottom during maintenance or repair.
Choosing the right door type is important to help with temperature regulation especially in a wine cellar space. For this small wine cellar on second floor in Nashville, the team installed a dua-pane insulated door, which means that there is a thermal brake in between the L-shaped, almost frameless glasses.
It has a custom steel enclosure that seals well to retain the temperature inside the wine cellar. The custom steel frame is also insulated with spray foam within the tubing of the actual steel structure. Given all these qualities, you can be 100 percent sure that the door is sealed like the exterior grade ones.
